I am not on good terms with my ex-husband, but his mother and I are still very close. She was recently hospitalized for something that could be life threatening. If and when she does pass away, should I attend the funeral? My presence might make my ex-husband uncomfortable, but his mother has really meant a lot to my life.

Despite the fact that you are close to your ex-mother-in-law, I would advise against attending her funeral. Your ex-husband will most likely be experiencing deep sorrow and your attendance might be like adding salt to a wound. When the time comes, send a sympathy card and stay away from the funeral.
